DIY Baby Shampoo & Body Wash

If you’ve been following me for awhile, you know that I’m always coming up with my own ways to make DIY recipes for food, home wellness remedies and of course replacements for highly toxic baby, skin care and cleaning products.

I was just at my Mom’s house and, bless her heart, she picked up some baby wash that she felt was “clean” for the baby. I took a look at the ingredients, as that’s the first thing I do with any packaged food, and had to eloquently tell her the Comforts for Baby Body Wash she purchased, with love and good intent, was JUNK and full of chemicals.

Here’s what was in the Comforts for Baby Body Wash (exactly the same as Johnson & Johnson products – RUN from this stuff….as FAST as you can!):

Water, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate, Sodium Trideceth Sulfate, PEG-150 Distearate, Glycerin, Polyquaternium-10, Tetrasodium EDTA, Sodium Chloride, Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Benzoate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Parfum

Recognize any of those ingredients? Aside from the water, neither did I!

And um, shouldn’t that be a red flag? Why are we going to put that slough of chemicals all over our sweet little babies skin, only to be absorbed into their delicate skin and right into their blood stream?

DIY Baby SoapNo thanks!

Time to take matters into my own hands,  and make a Baby Shampoo & Body Wash that I know the ingredients AND how to pronounce them:

1/4 cup Organic Coconut Oil

1/4 cup Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap

1/4 cup Warm Filtered Water

10-15 drops doTerra Lavender Oil (*affiliate link: or your favorite essential oil)

This took me literally less than 5 mins to make and lasts forever!! Totally BUDGET FRIENDLY and chemical free. I made my first batch when we gave Giana her first bath (Jan ’14) and I’m NOW just refilling it (April 2015). Mind you, we don’t bathe her everyday, as I don’t think babies need baths on the daily.

Did you know by over-bathing your baby, can actually strip their natural oils from their body? Especially if you are using garbage like Johnson & Johnson or Comforts for Baby.

This is what I found by using this DIY Baby Wash vs the standard store bought kind, that we used on the two older kids (they were kind of like our guinea pigs, HA).

  • Coconut oil naturally moisturized her skin
  • The lavender oil is super calming on skin and baby (helps them sleep well)
  • Dr. Bronner’s soap is scent-free, mild and so gentle on the skin

We bathe the babe maybe 1-2 x’s a week.  Partially because we are so busy with the older two and their evening sports schedules, and because she’s just not getting dirty or sweaty! We do wash her hands, face and skin folds (“spot cleaning” if you will), but we’ll use our Norwex body cloth for that. My friend sells them, so I highly recommend them (psst, they have awesome kitchen and window cloths too!).

There you have it, your easy, DIY Baby Shampoo & Body Wash that you can do in a matter of minutes, and is not only gentle and calming on the baby, but also your bank account!
