What is a Superfood?

Superfood, as defined by the Oxford dictionary is “a nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being”. In short terms, it is something we all need to incorporate more into our daily nutritional regime!

The good news is, with so many people honing in on their nutrition these days, reading labels and becoming more selective as to what they put in their grocery cart, we are seeing more options at our local health food store (think Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, etc).  Since they aren’t loaded with artificial sweeteners or processed, they have NO side effects, as they can be found in nature.

Some of notable superfoods are (keep in mind, these are fresh off the truck or boat, not canned or frozen):

  • Apples
  • Beans
  • Blueberries
  • Broccoli
  • Oats
  • Oranges
  • Pumpkin
  • Raspberries
  • Salmon
  • Spinach
  • Strawberries
  • Tea (green or black)
  • Tomatoes
  • Turkey (nitrate free; free-range)
  • Walnuts
  • Yogurt (Greek is best)

All these superfoods have different benefits for your health.

They can help fight cancer cells in your body, keep your blood sugar level healthy, lower your bad cholesterol and increase the good one, help you prevent cardiac disease, among so many other health benefits. The ones in green can be found also in Shakeology®! (how sweet is that – now you see WHY it’s a daily ritual for me??).

Always remember, that one of the most important things in being healthier and fit is to keep a balanced diet and eat properly! There is no magic trick to lose overnight, only hard work, dedication and consistency can help you reach your goals. You just need to know a few tips and commit yourself until you reach your goal.

Do yourself a favor and become educated on what you put into your body!  Do your research.  If it didn’t come from the soil, ocean or farm, and was made in a factory, our bodies aren’t intended to eat it.
