A Mom’s Mission to Promote Healthy Living in our Kids

I’m probably one of the most proud stay-at-home Mom’s that is still trying to figure out how to juggle it all. A little background – I stepped out of corporate America, working in Commercial Real Estate for 8 years, to be with my kids, after my 2nd was born. My daughter is almost 3 years old, and my son just turned 1. Boy, let me tell you how much they teach me. Wait, isn’t one of my roles as a parent, is to teach them and be their role model? Sometimes I feel like I’m a student sitting in THEIR classroom. But you know what; it’s grounded me and really narrowed my focus on my true passion. They are of course at the tippy top of that list, but as a fitness enthusiast and one that has been active my entire life, I am trying to do them right by understanding the importance of healthy living.

For me, a natural progression from the corporate world to Mommy-land, was to become a Beachbody® Coach. I’ve always been a fan of their products for years. Although the programs we have, sat and collected dust over the years. Not because I was sitting on my rear not doing a thing, but because I had become a self-professed gym rat. I figured by spending 1 hour to 1.5 hours in the gym each morning, I should magically have this fantastic figure, right? WRONG! It wasn’t because I was standing around the water fountain yucking it up with the trainers or fellow club members, but because I had done the same thing over and over and over again. I had hit a plateau, right? That, and I had realized my diet was way out of whack.

There are many types of fitness enthusiasts. Like I said earlier, I have been one for a very long time, but, there are different categories of enthusiasts, in my mind. They are: the professional type, i.e. Personal Trainers, pro-Athletes, etc., the active type that have a pretty good knowledge of how it all comes together, and lastly, the uneducated fitness enthusiast. Until now, I definitely fell into the latter of these categories.

After having my son, I knew it was time for a change and going to the gym, just wasn’t cutting it for me. Not only was I not motivated to make the effort to go just to see little result, I didn’t want to spend the extra time away from my family to get back into shape. I knew there had to be another way. And, as the role model I was set out to be, I was determined to find it, so my children would recognize the power of good health and fitness.

After many years of my old Beachbody programs, Power 90® and Slim in 6® collecting dust on the shelves, I had the great fortune of being re-introduced to Beachbody® from an old high school girlfriend. My dear friend, Kate. She and I share similar passions. Aside from our kids, we boasted about healthy and fit lifestyles. We wanted to see change in our kid’s futures and be a part of a movement that would set the bar for how our kids should view food choices and active living.

Recognizing the ultimate mission statement of Beachbody’s CEO, Carl Daikeler, “…is to reverse the trend of obesity by giving people the tools and support to achieve a fit and healthy body”, I knew this was a company that I could be proud of in representing. The rising trends of adult obesity is astounding, not to mention those of childhood obesity. Below is a map showing the statics over the course of almost 40 years, and how childhood obesity trends have sky-rocketed:

Did you see that? Children ages 2-5, in 2003 – 2004, the obesity rates were 13.9%!!! That’s roughly in the 95th percentile for their weight class! This was shocking to me! These babies were far too young to be susceptible to diabetes and subsequent related health issues that comes with being overweight. At the time I started with Beachbody®, in June of 2008, my daughter had just turned 2. I was not going to let her be a statistic, if I could help it.

Now granted, I don’t come from a very heavy family that had poor eating habits, as I don’t myself. We do our best to make healthy selections in our home cooked meals, as well as eating out, as we enjoy being social with our friends. But, as social as we are and our kids may become, it’s easy to be influenced. If I can be a successful role model to my children and instill proper nutrition and exercise in them, I will know that I am making an impact on their generation’s future. Kids have a powerful sense of influence. I’m hoping our influence, as their parents, will in turn, be passed along to their little friends and we can slowly make an impact on young children and our nation’s obesity issues. Wishful thinking??

Getting fit and healthy, by no means, should be a “fad” or a short term stint. It’s a lifestyle change. That’s what gives me great reward about being a Beachbody® Coach, is that I get to help people make a difference in their own lives. I get to see them change their lifestyle and be grateful for my support. And that’s it; I just support them and provide motivation and accountability when they need it. It’s not rocket science. I’m not doing anything earth shattering or that can’t be easily replicatible. Because I’m passionate about being healthy myself, it’s easy for me to want to do the same in helping others.

Through programs like P90X®, Power 90®, Kids Fit Club®, Turbo Jams® or Beachbody’s newest, ChaLEAN Extreme®, they make it easy to transition into a healthy lifestyle and get results. Each program comes with a progressive workout calendar, workout log, nutrition and fitness guides to help you track and stick with your preferred program.

The beauty to the Beachbody® programs is not only does it get adults of all ages up and active, but it gets the kids involved too. Shaun T, the creator of Hip Hop Abs®, did a video and nutrition program that is strictly tailored for kids, called Kids Fit Club®. Tony Horton, the creator of Beachbody’s most popular programs, P90X® and Power 90®, also had a kid focused program called Tony and the Kids®. These are great programs that are educating our youth the very importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Of course, I wish it were this easy and every kid would be inspired to live healthy, but it starts and ends with the parents. They must continue be a role model, in all facets of their children’s future to good health.

I will warrant that I am no fitness and nutrition expert with any sort of legal accreditation. I’m just an “active fitness enthusiast” that can share my own transformation with others, in hopes that it will inspire them to make a difference. I feel I’m also just here to continue my journey as a Mom with a passion to not only live healthy and fit myself, but to help impact our youth. I’m just one voice, but if I can help adults recognize a change in lifestyle, I’m holding out hope that by way of a little education, I can get our youths on the right path to a long and fruitful life.
